After checking everything on the server and unable to find anything, I
decided possibly something had gone funky with the steam install.  I deleted
the entire install, and started again.  No more system cpu usage spikes, and
seems to be back to its old self.  Something obviously went bad with the
other install for some reason..but re-install and its running perfect again.
